Juneau Alaska Art
On Wednesday, the Sealaska Heritage Institute opened its first art gallery in the state, and on Thursday it opened its Heritage Store to expand its collection. The community - big efforts began in late 2017 when the private nonprofit organization, which promotes cultural diversity through arts and public services, announced that it would make Northwest Coast Art (NWC) in Alaska part of its mission. We need to do what Santa Fe did for the arts in southwest New Mexico, and do it for the arts on the northwest coast of Alaska, "the website says.
The art industry in Southeast Alaska is already an industry worth $58 million, but there is so much more to do. The vision is to make Juneau a destination for art lovers and spark a new wave of interest in Alaska's art and cultural diversity. I'm looking for someone from Alaska who can be the eye and ear for what's happening in our state.
Donna is an Alaska ambassador for the Portrait Society and curated the exhibition "The Snow Child," which opened in Juneau in 2015 and runs through July 30, 2016 and will be on view at the Alaska Museum of Natural History in Anchorage until December 6, 2019. Donna is also the curator of the upcoming "Alaska Portraits of Alaska" exhibition, which opens in Fairbanks in July 2019 and runs through January 20, 2020. The exhibit will travel across Alaska and conclude with a nationwide tour in 2021, opening in Juneau on December 6, 2019.

Artworks selected from digital submissions will be sent or delivered by mail to the Alaska State Museum in Juneau, Alaska, on or after July 1, 2017. Handmade entries will not be picked up until one year after the closing date of the exhibition. Oversized or fragile pieces may not be shown in traveling exhibitions and may be returned after an exhibition in Juneau. All undeliverable items returned to the Alaska State Museum must be treated at the discretion of the Alaska State Museum and will not cause any damage to artworks.
If the governor's veto passes, Alaska will be the only state without an arts council. The Silver Seal, used to authenticate local artworks, and a service member called Creative Forces also cease to exist when the governors veto it.
Sealaska Heritage also plans to partner with Santa Fe College in New Mexico - based in San Francisco. SHI has teamed up with Alaska State College of Art and Design and the University of Alaska Fairbanks to offer advanced NWC arts opportunities to students seeking an arts degree. SHI will also offer classes to students wishing to study at the university's new Sealaska Center for the Arts and Humanities.
Bailey's trip is supported by the Harper Arts Touring Fund, which is managed by the Alaska State Council of the Arts and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
